How Big is Your God?
Do you remember the song ‘My God is so big? Usually, we think of it as a children’s song. There is so much truth in those simple uncomplicated words.
So how big is your God?
Several years ago, at our ladies meeting, I shared that I prayed for parking spaces. I have to say here I hate parking and prefer to find three spaces and I park in the centre one. One lady in the meeting who did not attend our church did not agree with me. She told her husband, who later wrote an article in their church magazine saying how disrespectful this was and is ‘Almighty God’ really interested in the minute details of our life?
My answer is yes!
Why do I believe that? Because the Bible tells me so!
Psalm 139 is a great psalm to confirm that God is interested in every area of our lives.
Right at the start of the chapter, the first words are LORD. The way it is written means that it is God’s personal name. Here God is making a covenant with us, He is personally agreeing to love and help the people who love and obey Him.
This Psalm tells me that God knows everything about me even when I sneak a piece of cheese from the fridge. Of being at the coast with the wind blowing at you and trying to knock you over. That no matter what I am doing, sitting down or standing up! Even when we are not thinking of Him, He is thinking of us. When we travel and when we are resting.
What we are going to say before we say it.
He is there protecting us. God’s hand in this verse means God power is on us protecting us. We have travelled 3000km over the last month. Each time we set off on our travels I ask the Lord to protect us. We were outside Lyon and suddenly everyone in front of us was breaking, a bit further down the road there were two lorries and a car, the car was totally destroyed. No one seemed to be injured but it had just happened, people were still getting out of their cars, if we had been a few minutes earlier we could have ended up involved and believe me with a 1½ ton caravan at the back it takes far longer to stop than normal.
The psalmist tells us that what God does for us is unbelievable. His presence is always with us, He loves us so much He never leaves us. And we can not hide from God. Zacchaeus was up a tree, really to see Jesus because he was small but I would imagine that he was also slightly hidden by the foliage of the tree, but Jesus knew he was there and looked up and spoke to him. We cannot hide from God He is everywhere. No matter where we are, God will guide and strengthen us. Nothing can hide God’s light from us. He made us perfectly. We have not evolved we are made by God and we are so complex only He could have done it. He watched us being formed in our mother’s womb. He has plans for us. God is always thinking about us. His thoughts are as numerous as the sand on the beach.
When we know God and His light, we are more aware of the wickedness around us. God’s enemies are our enemies.
The Bible tells us that he knows how many hairs we have on our heads, have you tried counting your hair! Our God is so big and strong and so mighty and as verse six says it is too wonderful for me to understand.
Going back to the prayer for parking spaces, we had some friends, Richard and Diane, visiting us and we decided to go into the city, do the tourist thing. We got to the Glacis car park and it was full and we were driving around looking for a space. Eventually, Richard said if we don’t find a space soon, we’ll forget about it and go home. Then he said something like ‘O Lord let us find a parking space’, at that moment a man walked towards us and pointed to his car indicating that he was leaving. Then he opened his door and took something out and walked towards us and handed Richard his ticket. As Richard said, God not only gets us a parking space but he also paid for the parking as well.
I need to be more aware of these ‘little’ everyday things that God does in my life. We are so blessed by our great God.
Verses 23 and 24
These verses are telling us how to continue to live in God’s presence, keep asking him to point out things in our life that need to be changed, we need to daily seek God.
The Apostle Paul also gives some advice to Timothy, in 2 Timothy 2:22 He tells him to run from anything that may cause him problems in his faith and to pursue righteous living.
And let say as Pauls said in 2 Tim 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race and I have remained faithful and now the prize awaits me……
