God’s Love is Amazing

Amazing Love.
When Sister Kathy said that the subject for December was Amazing Love, the first thing that came to mind was the hymn by John Wesley, And can it be. Written by him in response to his conversion to Christ.

When Graham and I were baptised in 1972 it was one of the hymns sang that day, later, when we were preparing the service for our wedding it was the first hymn on our order of service, the hymn is so special to us in our spiritual life and we wanted it to become as important as we started our married life together. The chorus is so powerful.

Amazing Love!, How can it be
That Thou, my God should die for me!
It doesn’t matter that it was written in the 18th century, the words resonate down the years to us today. We are fast heading to Christmas, when Christ came to earth, not as a tiny helpless baby, but as the Redeeming Son of God, sent to save us.

The book of Isaiah gets us ready to greet our Saviour and His Amazing Love, chapter 1 verse 18. It tells us that our sins are as scarlet, He our blessed Saviour will make them as white as snow.

Chapter 9 verse 6 & 7 ‘For a child is born to us’. His name is not just Jesus but ‘Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’ We are promised that His government and peace will never end, that He will rule with fairness and justice for all eternity.

I love this last part of verse 7 ‘That the passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!’ This will happen because God has promised, no matter what. His promises are always yes and Amen.
Because of this we can sing this verse

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Amazing Love!, How can it be
That Thou, my God should die for me!
